Small Business Month is an opportunity to recognize the entrepreneurs who strengthen our communities and the people and partnerships that help them succeed.

Supporting local businesses has always been important, but I believe it matters now more than ever. Business owners are managing rising costs, changing consumer expectations, increased competition, and continued economic uncertainty. At the same time, they must stay focused on their customers, employees, day-to-day operations, and future growth. That is why access to knowledgeable, responsive, and trusted professional advice is so important.
Small business owners are experts in their fields. They understand their customers, their products and services, and the day-to-day realities of operating their businesses. Successful owners also recognize that they do not need to be experts in every area. These owners build trusted networks around themselves, turning to lawyers, accountants, insurance professionals, and financial advisers for informed perspectives, timely advice, and support at key moments. The relationship between a small business and its financial institution should be an important part of that network. A strong financial relationship should not begin and end with a transaction or credit application. It should be built on understanding the business, asking the right questions, and providing advice that reflects both the owner’s immediate needs and longer-term goals.
Across Ontario, WFCU serves as a valuable sounding board for small business owners, helping them evaluate opportunities, prepare for growth, navigate uncertainty, and consider their businesses from a different perspective.

Strong partnerships do not happen by chance. Here are three practical actions business owners can take to strengthen their professional networks:

1. Review your network of advisers.

Consider the professionals you currently rely on for financial, legal, tax, insurance, and operational advice. Identify where you have strong relationships and where there may be gaps.
The right advisers should understand your business, communicate clearly, and offer perspectives that help you make informed decisions.
Person using a laptop while another person stands nearby holding a smartphone in a plant-filled small business workspace. Shelving with plants and supplies is visible in the background.

2. Share your plans before you need support.

Do not wait until you are facing an urgent challenge or immediate financing need to speak with your advisers. Share your goals, anticipated investments, concerns, and upcoming opportunities early.
The more your advisers understand about where your business is today and where you want it to go, the better positioned they will be to provide relevant and timely guidance.
Person wearing an apron and glasses reviewing paperwork and using a calculator at a wooden table in a home-based business workspace. Notebooks, documents, and packaging materials are visible on the table.

3. Schedule a financial check-in.

Set aside time to review your cash flow, financing, short-term priorities, and longer-term growth plans with your financial adviser.
A proactive conversation can help identify potential risks, uncover opportunities, and determine what steps may be needed to prepare your business for what comes next.
During Small Business Month, I am proud to recognize the hard work and determination of the small business owner. I am equally proud of our WFCU Managers across Ontario who share that passion and are committed to providing something equally important: the right partnership.
